If you are planning a Mediterranean cruise, there is a very high chance you will find yourself docking at the gorgeous Ligurian port of Savona. Nestled along the northern coast of Italy, Savona is a beautifully vibrant, historic, and wonderfully accessible stop. It also happens to be the primary home port for Costa Cruises, meaning the atmosphere is always buzzing with classic Italian excitement.

When we visited Savona onboard Costa Diadema, we wanted to see how easy it was to step off the ship and explore completely independently on foot. The verdict? It is incredibly simple, full of classic Italian charm, and offers excellent value for a cruise day out.

Here is our ultimate guide to exploring Savona on your own, packed with our first hand tips, tricks, and a few essential things to watch out for to ensure you have a stress free port day.

Our Interactive Map of Savona

Getting from Savona Cruise Port to the City Centre

Getting off the ship at the modern Palacrociere cruise terminal in Savona is a breeze. On our port day, there were absolutely no queues. The pathway off the ship was clearly signposted, and we walked straight off into the fresh coastal air.

Because Savona is a major home port, you will notice a lot of passenger turnaround here. This means the terminal area can get busy with travellers embarking and disembarking for their holidays. Just outside the terminal, you will encounter plenty of local vendors. On our cloudy visit, they were out in force selling umbrellas (just in case!).

Once you clear the immediate port terminal, your Italian adventure begins.

We Experience an ITALIAN PARTY and Explore SAVONA on Costa Diadema

Day 2 was our first full day onboard our Costa Diadema Cruise visiting ports in France, Italy and Spain. Today we were in Costa Cruises home port of Savona, Italy. We explored the port independently and visited some beautiful attractions including the Cathedral and The Priamar Fortress.

Navigating the Port: The Famous Swivel Bridge

To get from the cruise ship terminal into Savona's historic old town, most passengers head straight for the pedestrian swivel bridge, known locally as the Ponte Mobile. This unique bridge spans the entrance to the marina and occasionally opens to allow boats to enter and leave the harbour.

If you arrive just as the bridge opens, you may have a short wait before you can cross. Alternatively, you can simply follow the flat waterfront path around the marina, which is only slightly longer and offers a pleasant walk back towards the old town. Along the way, you'll pass a fantastic selection of seafood and pasta restaurants, many with outdoor seating overlooking the marina and your cruise ship.

💡 Tom and Dom TipIf the bridge is open when you arrive, we'd recommend taking the waterfront route instead of waiting. It's an easy, scenic walk with lovely marina views, and it's a great excuse to stop for a coffee, gelato or an authentic Italian lunch before heading back to the ship.

Exploring the Old Town and Medieval Towers

As soon as you cross into the old town, you are greeted by the striking Torre Leon Pancaldo. Also known simply as the Torretta, this 14th-century medieval tower sits right at the edge of the harbour. It is the ultimate symbol of Savona and makes a brilliant backdrop for a few quick cruise holiday photos.

Walking past the Torretta, the narrow streets (called carruggi) immediately give you those classic, picturesque Italian vibes. If you want an easy, fun way to see the city without too much walking, keep an eye out for Savona's tourist land train. It departs regularly near the old port bridge and is always packed with visitors looking for a scenic tour of the historic streets.

🚢 Don't Overpay for Cruise Line Excursions!

Before you hit "book" on those pricey shore excursions through your cruise line, take a look at Viator and GetYourGuide.

Booking independently not only saves you serious money, but it also unlocks smaller tour groups, more authentic local experiences, and the ultimate flexibility. Both platforms offer incredible worry-free cancellation policies and shore excursion guarantees to get you back to the ship on time.

The magnificent interior of Savona Cathedral, Santa Maria Assunta, in Italy, featuring stunning painted ceilings and ornate Baroque architecture.

Inside the Breathtaking Savona Cathedral

A very short walk from the harbour brings you to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Savona Cathedral). From the outside, the building is lovely, but the interior is absolutely magnificent.

The ceilings are covered in towering, beautifully detailed paintings and frescoes. The architecture is vast, peaceful, and stunningly ornate. We highly recommend stepping inside, as you could easily spend half an hour just marvelling at the incredible artwork. Best of all, it is free to enter, representing fantastic value for budget-conscious cruisers.

Right next door, you will find the Sistine Chapel of Savona (Cappella Sistina). While the chapel in Rome is globally famous, Savona's hidden gem was also commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV in the 15th century and features beautiful Renaissance frescoes.

Walking the Ramparts of Priamar Fortress

Next up, make your way to the Complesso Monumentale del Priamar (Priamar Fortress). Perched majestically on top of a hill overlooking the city and the sea, this massive 16th-century stronghold is impossible to miss.

The fortress itself has been beautifully restored, and there is an archaeological site and a museum inside for those who want to dig into Savona's military history. However, in our opinion, the absolute lowest-cost, highest-value feature of the fortress is the view.

Once you make the walk up to the highest point, you get a spectacular, bird's-eye view of the city, the archaeological ruins, and the coastline below. You can even see your cruise ship docked in the distance! We spent about an hour wandering through the ramparts and taking in the panoramic vistas. It is completely free to walk around the main grounds, which is brilliant value.

Shopping and Restaurants in Savona

We visited Savona on a Sunday, and we were initially a bit worried that most of the local shops, bars, and restaurants would be closed. Happily, we were very pleasantly surprised! There was plenty open, and the town was incredibly lively.

For shopping fans, Via Paleocapa is Savona's main high street. It is lined with gorgeous, elegant arched buildings, local boutiques, and plenty of familiar international brands.

After a bit of retail therapy, it is time to eat. Ligurian cuisine is famous for its simple, aromatic, and fresh ingredients. You absolutely have to try:

  • Farinata: A delicious, savoury pancake made from chickpea flour, baked in hot copper ovens. It is incredibly cheap, filling, and perfect for eating on the go.

  • Trofie al Pesto: A classic local pasta dish tossed in rich, fragrant basil pesto that originated right here in this region.

If you prefer to sit down with a glass of Italian wine, head back down toward the port area. The lively promenade is packed with excellent, good value fish and pasta restaurants that offer beautiful views of the marina.

Can You Visit Genoa from Savona Cruise Port?

While we had an absolute blast exploring Savona on foot, we did agree that if we were to return to this port on a future cruise, we would likely hop on a train to explore nearby Genoa (Genova).

Savona's main railway station is roughly a 20-minute flat walk (or a quick taxi ride) from the port. From there, you can catch a direct train to Genoa in under an hour, making it an incredibly easy and low-cost DIY excursion. However, if you are visiting for the first time, Savona itself is more than charming enough to keep you entertained for a wonderful day out.

Final Thoughts

Savona is a highly underrated cruise port that rewards those who like to stretch their legs and explore on foot. With its fascinating history, breathtaking cathedral, and delicious local food, it is a fantastic, stress-free destination that offers superb value. Just remember to keep an eye on that swivel bridge, and you will have a wonderful day ashore!
