Can a traditional, smaller cruise ship still deliver the goods in an era of floating mega-resorts?
When Ambassador Cruise Line launched Ambition in 2023 as their second vessel, plenty of British cruisers wondered whether she could match the popularity of her larger fleetmate, Ambience. Having sailed with Ambassador before, we jumped aboard Ambition to test the cabins, sample the dining, watch the shows, and see how she stacks up for UK holidaymakers.
After dozens of cruises and hundreds of days at sea across various lines, we have learned that a ship's marketing gloss does not always match the day-to-day reality onboard. We look past the brochure promises to give you practical, straightforward advice on what genuinely works and where the compromises lie.
In this Ambassador Ambition review, we explore a mid-sized ship of 48,123 gross tons carrying up to 1,200 guests. Offering classic British cruising, regional UK departures, complimentary spa facilities, and standout theatre shows, Ambition provides fantastic value for money for mature travellers wanting a relaxed, traditional sea voyage without paying mega-ship prices.

This is our Ambassador Ambition Review. We were invited to board Ambassador Ambition for a 2 night, Taste of Ambassador cruise, that went from Bristol to Tilbury. We have put together this video in the hopes of it giving you a clear indication of the amenities Ambassador Ambition has to offer.

Embarkation and First Impressions
Departing from regional ports is one of Ambassador's biggest selling points. While the line sails from multiple UK ports, our journey began at Royal Portbury Dock in Bristol, ending in London Tilbury.
Starting a cruise in an industrial cargo port like Bristol is a slightly different affair compared to Southampton. You will pass through an initial police check at the port gates before taking a five-minute drive past rows of newly imported cars to reach the terminal.
The luggage drop-off arrangement here is brilliant. Ambassador lets you pull right up, drop tagged suitcases straight out of your boot with the porters, and then park up in a designated bay just two minutes away.
The terminal building itself is basic and warehouse-like, but the check-in operation was cracking. We breezed through security, completed check-in, and had our cruise cards in hand within three minutes. A quick shuttle coach brought us to the dockside gazebo to walk the gangway.
Boarding on Deck 5 felt slightly underwhelming at first because you step into an ordinary corridor rather than a grand entrance. However, once you take a few steps into the central multi-deck atrium, the ship opens up beautifully. It is smaller and more intimate than Ambience, but modern, bright, and very welcoming.
Cabins and Accommodation
We stayed in an Outside Cabin on Deck 9. The room offered ample space, comfortable twin beds convertible to a double, and good wardrobe storage for hanging clothes.
Ambition features UK three-pin sockets alongside European two-pin plugs and bedside USB ports, meaning you will not need to carry a bag full of travel adapters to keep your devices charged.
The bathroom layout was functional, though we experienced a minor maintenance niggle with our plumbing during the trip.
One critical point for guests with reduced mobility: Ambition has very few fully accessible cabins across her accommodation decks. If you require an adapted cabin with wide doors and a roll-in shower, make sure you book well in advance, as these staterooms sell out very early.

Dining: Main Dining Room, Buffet, and Snacks
Dining is central to any cruise, and the included food on Ambition exceeded our expectations.
Buckingham Restaurant
The main dining room operates on two traditional evening sittings. Night one suffered a slight delay as the team settled into service, but by the second evening, the pacing was spot-on.
Dinner Quality: Menus feature four courses with plenty of variety. Standout dishes on our gala night included a tender fillet mignon and roast rack of lamb.
The Baked Alaska Parade: Ambassador keeps traditional cruise heritage alive. The dining room team paraded through the restaurant with sparkling Baked Alaskas while guests waved napkins, creating a fun, celebratory atmosphere.
Breakfast Style: Unlike most lines that offer full table service in the main restaurant, Ambition runs breakfast in Buckingham as a calm, plated buffet. Waiters serve hot tea, coffee, fruit juices, and daily chef specials such as eggs Benedict directly to your table.
Borough Market Buffet & Alfresco Grill
The casual buffet on Deck 11 offers a solid spread for breakfast and lunch.
Self-Service: Food in Borough Market is self-service, which keeps queues moving quickly at peak lunch hours.
Lunch Variety: Highlights included hot carving stations with roast potatoes, fresh vegetable medleys, and an authentic curry section serving proper chicken tikka masala.
Alfresco Grill: Situated just outside the buffet by the pool deck, this counter serves freshly cooked burgers, hot dogs, chips, and pizza slices. We found the quality here noticeably better than the equivalent grill on Ambience.
Afternoon Tea: Served daily, featuring freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam. It is well worth popping in for an afternoon treat.
Ambassador ships do not operate a late-night buffet. Instead, between 11:00 pm and 11:30 pm, crew members circulate through the main evening bars with trays of tasty savoury canapés.
For speciality dining, Ambition houses two venues carrying a modest cover charge (around £15 to £17 per person): Saffron, serving high-end Indian cuisine, and Lupino's, offering Mediterranean dining.

Bars, Lounges, and Drinks Packages
Getting served a drink on Ambition was never a chore. Even in the main theatre before curtain-up, roving bar staff were quick to take orders.
The Angel Bar: Positioned on the upper level of the atrium, this modern, stylish venue is the social hub for people-watching and pre-dinner cocktails.
The Cavern: A spacious live-music lounge featuring house band sets, evening game shows, and late-night discos.
Pendennis Lounge: A midships lounge hosting daytime quizzes, choir rehearsals, and small theatre vignettes.
The Purple Turtle: On Ambience, the Purple Turtle is an upbeat British pub. On Ambition, it has been reimagined as a sophisticated, tranquil wine bar, making it ideal for a quiet conversation away from the evening crowds.
We had the top-tier Expedition Drinks Package, which covers premium wines, spirits, cocktails, and daily onboard service gratuities. Menus use a simple colour-coded dot system so you know exactly which drinks fall under your package tier.
If you prefer to pay as you go, bar prices on Ambassador remain very reasonable compared to American-owned cruise lines, meaning you can enjoy your holiday without needing a package to avoid an eye-watering bill at the end.
Entertainment and Daytime Activities
If you worry that a smaller ship will leave you twiddling your thumbs on a sea day, Ambition proves otherwise. The cruise director's programme was jam-packed from morning until late.
The Palladium Theatre
The production cast delivered top-tier entertainment in the main show lounge. We watched A Night in Nashville, an energetic country showcase, followed by Love Is in the Air, an elegant revue set in a park. The vocals and choreography were comfortably on par with lines charging twice the fare.
Ambassador also brings guest speakers and personalities onboard; our sailing featured an engaging theatre talk and meet-and-greet with Linda Robson (credited in the programme as Linda Lucardi).
Daytime Life & Unique Touches
Vignettes: Ambassador's signature bite-sized plays run for 5 to 10 minutes in the lounges. They are witty, theatrical, and unique to the brand.
Grafton Street Crafting: An open-plan craft studio running specialist workshops led by guest tutors (small materials charge applies).
Free Spa Facilities: The Green Sea Spa features treatment rooms and a salon, but crucially, the thermal suite and steam room are free of charge to all guests, something almost unheard of on modern ships.
Deck Games & Pools: The main pool deck on Deck 11 features two whirlpools, a central swimming pool with water fountains, deck quoits, and a giant outdoor chess set.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time aboard Ambition. She delivers an authentic, faff-free British cruise experience with genuinely friendly crew, strong production shows, and high-standard dining.
Ambition is best suited for:
Mature travellers and retirees (aged 45+) looking for a relaxed, child-free atmosphere without loud gimmicks.
Guests who want the convenience of sailing from regional ports close to home to avoid the trek to Southampton or London airports.
Travellers seeking good value for money, modest drinks pricing, and classic cruise traditions like gala evenings and afternoon tea.
Look elsewhere if:
You require extensive family facilities, kids' clubs, or high-octane attractions like waterslides and climbing walls.
You need large numbers of fully wheelchair-accessible cabins.
You prefer 24-hour round-the-clock dining options or late-night hot buffets.
Overall, Ambassador delivers on its promise of a warm welcome at sea, offering quality cruising that will not break the bank.
Conclusion
Ambition holds her own against her sister ship Ambience. What impressed us most was how well the crew managed crowd flow and entertainment pacing, ensuring there was always something to do without feeling overwhelmed.
Our top tip for boarding Ambition: double-check your shipboard account and package activations at reception on day one. Our drinks package was not initially linked to our cruise card, but the guest services desk sorted it within minutes.
