Does Ambassador Cruise Line really deliver on its promise to offer the warmest welcome at sea?
After dozens of cruises and hundreds of days at sea across various lines, we have learned that glossy marketing brochures do not always reflect the everyday reality once you step onboard. We recently spent 11 nights sailing on Ambassador Ambience to put her dining, entertainment, service, and public spaces to the test.
Our Ambassador Ambience review finds that the ship excels in traditional British cruising, offering first-class entertainment, exceptional theatre plays, outstanding value drinks packages, and remarkably friendly service. While she is an older ship with occasional lift and temperature quirks, her quality dining and classic charm make her a cracking choice for mature travellers.
Embarkation at London Cruise Terminal (Tilbury)
Departing from the London Cruise Terminal at Tilbury is a refreshingly straightforward experience compared to the massive commercial hubs at Southampton.
We booked official port parking directly through Ambassador, which is situated right opposite the terminal. A drive-through baggage drop makes unloading your suitcases effortless before you park.
Tilbury is a historic, smaller terminal with limited seating, so the port staff are strict about keeping to your allocated arrival slot. While a temporary computer glitch delayed check-in for Dom for about 20 minutes, the shoreside team resolved it manually with plenty of helpful staff on hand. Once through security, it is just a short, flat walk along the covered gangway to the ship.

The Ship Vibe, Layout, and Centre Court
Walking into the ship brings you straight into Centre Court, a tasteful three-deck atrium that sets a calm, traditional tone.
Ambience is not a shiny modern megaship packed with climbing walls or waterslides. Instead, she offers classic maritime decor, plenty of quiet lounges, and an easy-to-navigate deck plan.
The atmosphere onboard is overwhelmingly friendly and tailored specifically to a mature British crowd aged 50 and over. You will find traditional pastimes throughout the day, including crafting sessions, card games, and classical music sets in the lounges.
Cabins and Practical Comfort
We booked a guaranteed cabin and were allocated an Ocean View cabin on Deck 6 (cabin 6221). To find out more about our cabin our full review here.
While the decor is traditional and shows some age, the cabin was spotlessly clean, functional, and surprisingly spacious. The storage space is phenomenal, boasting a walk-in wardrobe area and deep drawers that easily accommodate packing for longer itineraries.
The cabin also features proper tea and coffee making facilities with a kettle, British 3-pin sockets, and a USB charging point at the desk.

Dining Onboard: Included Restaurants vs Specialty Dining
Ambassador takes real pride in its culinary offerings, and the overall food quality onboard was high.
The Buckingham Restaurant (Main Dining Room)
The Buckingham Restaurant on Deck 7 serves breakfast, lunch, and a formal five-course dinner. Breakfast and lunch operate on an open-seating basis, while dinner uses traditional fixed sittings (early sitting at 5:45 pm and late sitting at 8:15 pm).
The five-course evening menus offer great variety and traditional British favourites. Our only gripe was scheduling: the late 8:15 pm sitting caused us to miss the start of the evening game shows and quizzes in the Purple Turtle.
Borough Market (The Buffet)
Borough Market is split into distinct food stations and serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and casual dinner. Crew members serve you at each counter, keeping hygiene standards high.
The food selection is impressive, featuring clearly labelled allergens and a dedicated gluten-free station. However, the drink and juice stations can feel cramped during peak breakfast hours.
Specialty Dining Options
Ambience offers three specialty dining venues at very reasonable cover charges:
Saffron: The standout Indian dining venue located aft of Borough Market. The curries, sides, and presentation were absolutely delightful and worth every penny.
Sea & Grass: A seven-course tasting menu experience (six set courses plus your choice of main). While the starter courses were fantastic, our main course fell slightly below expectations.
Chef's Table: An exclusive multi-course culinary experience hosted in the Buckingham Restaurant on select evenings.
Late Night Food Note
Ambassador does not offer a late-night buffet. Instead, crew circulate through the bars around 11:00 pm with trays of small canapés. If you enjoy a substantial late-night bite after an evening of drinks, this might leave you wanting a bit more.

Drinks Packages and Bar Service
Ambassador offers some of the best value drinks packages across the British cruise market.
Menus across the lounges are colour-coded, making it straightforward to see which cocktails, spirits, and beers are covered under each package tier. Ambassador operates three distinct options:
Expedition Package (Top Tier): Includes premium cocktails, house spirits, wines by the glass, draught beers, barista coffees and speciality teas at Dickens and the Pool Coffee Shop, plus your daily service charges (gratuities).
Explorer Package (Mid-Tier): Covers house wines, draught beers, selected spirits, and soft drinks.
Experience Package (Non-Alcoholic): A dedicated soft drinks package featuring unlimited draught sodas, fruit juices, and mocktails.
Free Teas and Coffees: Complimentary self-service filter coffee, tea, hot water, and milk are available 24 hours a day in Borough Market for all guests without needing any package.
Package Rules to Note: There is no longer a fixed daily cap on alcoholic drinks, but orders are limited to one drink per person at a time with a minimum 15-minute wait between orders. Standard single spirit measures are 25ml, with double measures available upon request.
Entertainment, Theatre, and Nightlife
Entertainment is where Ambassador Ambience truly outshines much of her competition.
Exceptional In-House Acting Troupe
In addition to the standard singing and dancing show cast, Ambience employs a dedicated team of theatre actors. They performed a full-stage production of the play Abigail's Party in the Palladium Theatre, which was delivered to a West End standard. The actors also staged comedic pop-up vignettes in the Botanical Lounge that became must-watch daily events.
Lounge Entertainment
The Purple Turtle: A lively British pub setting featuring daily quizzes, interactive game shows, and live music. It fills up fast, so arrive early for a seat.
Raffles: The bustling piano bar on Deck 7, ideal for evening singalongs.
The Observatory Lounge (Deck 14): Offers sweeping forward-facing sea views by day and transforms into a venue for ballroom dancing, guest cabaret, and late-night disco by night.
Ship Quirks: Things to Keep in Mind
Ambience has heaps of character, but as an older vessel, she does have a few minor quirks to bear in mind:
The Lifts: Each elevator features a quirky bespoke interior design, but they were temperamental during our cruise, with occasional breakdowns causing delays.
Air Conditioning: Cabin temperature controls are mechanical dials, and climate control in some public areas is still being fine-tuned.
Corridors and Decor: While public lounges look fresh, some stateroom corridors retain a slightly dated aesthetic.

Theatre and entertainment enthusiasts who appreciate proper plays and live music.
Travellers looking for great value without the nickel-and-diming found on larger lines.

Cruisers looking for high-energy resort ships with waterparks, climbing walls, and late-night pizza buffets.
Families with young children (Ambience is primarily an adult-focused ship).
Final Verdict and Top Tip
We thoroughly enjoyed our 11 nights aboard Ambassador Ambience. The warmth and friendliness of the crew, coupled with the stellar entertainment and quality dining, made it a memorable holiday.
Our top tip: If you enjoy taking part in the evening pub quizzes and game shows in the Purple Turtle, opt for the early dining sitting (5:45 pm). The late 8:15 pm sitting overlaps with the 9:15 pm entertainment schedule, making it tricky to grab a table in time.
