After dozens of cruises and hundreds of days at sea, we've learned that stepping off the beaten track often yields the most memorable adventures. Exploring Flåm independently turned out to be one of the best choices we made on our entire itinerary.

Docking in Flåm: A Faff-Free Morning Shore Excursion
When we opened our balcony curtains aboard Enchanted Princess, we were completely blown away by the scenery. Towering mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls framed the quiet village right outside our window.
Flåm is an extraordinarily small cruise port where you simply step off the vessel and find yourself immediately in the town centre. After a quick bite in the International Marketplace Buffet, we grabbed our day bags and disembarked without any hassle.
There are no tender boats required here, making it completely faff-free to get ashore early. We spent our first hour wandering past traditional Norwegian wooden architecture, admiring the local church, and listening to the rushing river running through the valley.
We stopped at a charming Norwegian lodge-style café for a warm morning drink. While the milky lattes were delicious, Norway's reputation for high prices certainly holds true. Our two coffees set us back £9.25, which felt steep, but sitting inside the cozy timber building made it an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

While the Flåm Railway is undeniably the most popular attraction in port, we opted for something a bit more unconventional. At 11:00 AM, we had a reservation with e-Mobility to rent a tiny Twizy electric car for two hours. It turned out to be a cracking decision that we would repeat in a heartbeat.
What is a Twizy Electric Car?
If you've never seen a Renault Twizy, imagine a cross between a mobility scooter and a toboggan. It has four wheels and fully enclosed electric power, but the seating is tandem—meaning Dom drove while Tom sat directly behind with legs stretched on either side.
Despite its compact footprint, this little vehicle is surprisingly nippy and capable of reaching speeds up to 80 km/h on main roads.

Driving the Mountain Roads & Viewpoints
Each Twizy comes pre-loaded with a GPS audio navigation route that guides you straight to the best vantage points. The built-in system automatically announces key points of interest, shares local history, and directs you back if you take a wrong turn.
We navigated winding hairpin bends and zipped through mountain tunnels, climbing high above the fjord. The freedom to stop whenever and wherever we wanted was proper brilliant.
We pulled over at breathtaking lookouts, taking in miles of panoramic fjord views without battling large tour group crowds. We even had time for a short mountain hike to reach an elevated viewpoint on our own schedule.
Watch for campervans: The narrow mountain roads attract plenty of tourist campervans, requiring extra caution on tight bends.
Dress in layers: Mountain weather changes quickly, though the Twizy keeps you shielded from direct wind.

By early afternoon, the sky opened up and it began pouring with rain. Fortunately, Flåm offers several indoor alternatives right by the cruise terminal, making rainy afternoons easy to manage.

We headed straight into the Flåm Railway Museum, which turned out to be a hidden gem. Best of all, entry is completely free!
The museum details the incredible engineering history behind constructing the Flåmsbana railway through steep mountain terrain. It features exhibits on traditional Norwegian life, historical costumes, and preserved railway cars, offering a fascinating look into local heritage.
Souvenir Shopping & Local Encounters
After exploring the museum, we browsed the local souvenir shops around the station area. The shops are packed with high-end Scandinavian outdoor clothing, rain jackets, Viking memorabilia, and hand-carved wooden trolls.
Before heading back aboard, we had the pleasure of meeting the General Manager of the Port of Flåm. He kindly reached out to welcome us and gifted us two Port of Flåm souvenir mugs, which was a lovely gesture.
Remarkably, he also serves as an on-call firefighter and had been out earlier assisting at a mountain road accident involving campervans. Meeting locals who keep this beautiful port running smoothly made our day even more memorable.
