Can you really skip the expensive shore excursions and explore Reykjavík independently from a cruise ship without missing out on the magic? On our second visit to Iceland's vibrant capital, we decided to leave the nine-hour coach tours behind, step off the ship, and tackle the city entirely under our own steam.
After dozens of cruises and hundreds of days spent exploring ports around the world, we have learned that some destinations practically demand an organized tour, whereas others are absolute gems for DIY wandering. Reykjavík definitely falls into the latter category, provided you know how to navigate the port shuttles and avoid a few common tourist traps.
To explore Reykjavík independently from a cruise ship, take the complimentary port shuttle from Skarfabakki terminal directly to Harpa Concert Hall in the city center. From Harpa, you can easily walk a compact circular route covering Laugavegur shopping street, the famous Rainbow Road, Hallgrímskirkja church, and Lake Tjörnin all within a few hours.

Getting From the Port to Reykjavík City Centre
Disembarking our ship from Deck 5, we immediately spotted the designated shuttle bus stop located directly outside the terminal building. The port of Reykjavík provides a complimentary shuttle service that runs approximately every 20 minutes between the cruise berths and the city centre.
The bus journey takes a swift 10 minutes to reach Harpa Concert Hall, located right in the heart of the downtown harbour district. Alternatively, if you prefer to stretch your legs, the scenic walk along the seafront path takes roughly 45 minutes each way.

Journey Time: 10-minute drive or a flat 45-minute walk along the coastal path.
Queue Strategy: Wait times can build up when multiple ships are in port, but our wait was a manageable 15 minutes on the way in.
We initially considered booking the local Hop-On Hop-Off bus at Harpa, but we quickly decided against it after reading several poor reviews. Speaking with fellow passengers later confirmed that skipping it was a cracking decision. Some travellers waited over an hour and a half at bus stops, only for fully loaded buses to drive straight past them. Reykjavík is wonderfully compact and walkable, making a self-guided stroll far more reliable and completely faff-free.

This was our second time visiting. This time we decided to explore the city of Reykjavik. The city is one of the smallest capitals in the world and is very easy to explore on foot. We visited several tourist attractions such as the Rainbow Street, the Hallgrímskirkja Church and Old Parliament building. We explored Reykjavik independently.

Laugavegur Shopping Street & The Rainbow Road
From Harpa Concert Hall, navigating into the main retail hub is delightfully simple. We recommend using the central H&M store as your primary navigation anchor. Head straight towards H&M, turn left at the corner, and pass the small grassy monument area to enter Laugavegur, the city's primary shopping street.
Laugavegur is lined with a charming mix of traditional Icelandic boutiques, outdoor gear outlets like Icewear, and handy local supermarkets. We even stumbled across a dedicated Christmas shop fully open in August, which was a fun surprise for early holiday shoppers. The area also houses a tourist information center and the popular Reykjavík Ice Bar, where guests sip cocktails out of glasses carved entirely from ice.
Key Landmark: Use the main H&M building as a landmark to turn left into the shopping district.
Local Shopping: Excellent spot to pick up authentic Icelandic woolens or outdoor gear.
Quirky Finds: Look out for the year-round Christmas store and the local Ice Bar along the strip.
As we continued up the street, we turned onto Skólavörðustígur, famously known as the Rainbow Road. Freshly repainted following the local Pride celebrations, this vibrant street offers a gorgeous photo backdrop lined with lively cafes, independent craft shops, and local bakeries.

Hallgrímskirkja Church & Thermal Baths
Walking straight up the gentle incline of Rainbow Road leads you directly to Hallgrímskirkja, the iconic landmark visible from almost anywhere in Reykjavík. The magnificent concrete facade, inspired by Iceland's volcanic basalt columns, is even more impressive up close.
Entry to the main sanctuary of the church is completely free, allowing visitors to admire the soaring organ and minimalist modern interior. There is a paid elevator to the top of the clock tower, which costs around 1,200 ISK (roughly £7), offering panoramic views over the colorful rooftops of the city. However, the signage for tower tickets is quite poor, creating lengthy queues and plenty of confusion inside. Due to the heavy queue, we decided to stick to exploring the stunning main hall.
Just around the corner from the church lies Sundhöllin, one of the city's historic public bathhouses. Fed by natural geothermal water, taking a dip in one of these local pools is a proper Icelandic tradition and a bargain alternative to expensive commercial lagoons.
Lake Tjörnin, Town Hall & The Old Town
Leaving the church behind, we strolled down towards Lake Tjörnin and the historic Old Town area where the Icelandic Parliament and Town Hall (Ráðhús) sit side by side. This district features a charming blend of traditional turf-roofed architecture alongside sleek modern designs.
We stopped inside the Town Hall cafe for a hot coffee and a bite to eat. Positioned right on the water's edge, this cafe proved to be a spot-on sanctuary. It offered a quiet atmosphere, reasonable prices, and far fewer crowds than the busy establishments along Rainbow Road. While relaxing near the lake, keep your eyes on the skies, as the area sits directly under the low flight path for domestic aircraft.

Icelandic Menus & Famous Street Food
When it comes to lunchtime options in Reykjavík, you will find everything from high-end multi-course restaurants to casual street vendor stalls. Some traditional sit-down menus featured controversial local dishes such as minke whale and roasted puffin, which definitely spark lively debates among visitors.
If you prefer a quick, budget-friendly meal, the legendary Icelandic hot dog is an absolute must. We tracked down the famous Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur stand near the harbour, but the line stretched right down the pavement. Icelandic hot dogs are made from a blend of lamb, pork, and beef, traditionally served "með öllu" (with everything, including crispy onions, sweet mustard, and remoulade) for around 600 to 800 ISK (£3.50 to £4.80). Unfortunately, because the queue was so immense, we had to pass this time to stay on schedule for our return shuttle.
Harbour Waterfront & The Sun Voyager
Heading back towards the waterfront, we stumbled across the striking Chinese Embassy building sitting right in the center of town before reaching the coastal promenade. The walk along the shoreline provides sweeping vistas across the bay, with snow-dusted mountains framing the backdrop.
Along this coastal path sits Sólfar, better known as the Sun Voyager sculpture. Designed by Jón Gunnar Árnason, this gleaming stainless-steel artwork resembles a Viking longship pointing out towards the sea. It is an incredibly popular spot for photographs, and on a clear day, it offers fantastic angles of visiting cruise ships anchored out in the bay.
Return Logistics: Managing the Shuttle Faff
The walk back along the seafront brings you right back to Harpa Concert Hall, where the complimentary return shuttle buses collect passengers for the short drive back to Skarfabakki port. However, this is where our otherwise smooth day hit a bit of a bump.
With four large cruise ships in port simultaneously, hundreds of passengers descended on the Harpa shuttle stop at the exact same time. Instead of an orderly line, the queue quickly devolved into a chaotic scramble every time a bus pulled up. As British travellers accustomed to proper queuing etiquette, the free-for-all pushing was quite disappointing and felt a bit unsafe.
Luckily, a second bus arrived shortly behind the first, allowing us to secure seats and head back to the terminal without further delay. Once back at the port, passing through security and re-boarding our ship was smooth and efficient.

Exploring Reykjavík independently is worth every penny, or in this case, every saved penny. Skipping the official shore excursions allowed us to explore the city at our own pace, discover quieter local cafes, and enjoy iconic sights without being rushed in a large group.

Who Should Consider Alternatives: Travelers with limited mobility or those who prefer structured historical commentary and guaranteed transport schedules.
Value for Money: Exceptional. Utilizing the free port shuttle and opting for a self-guided walking loop saved us hundreds of pounds compared to ship-sponsored city tours.
