Ships dock right alongside the fjord in Akureyri, offering an incredibly easy walk straight into town.
Walking off the pier, your very first port of call should be the Hof Cultural and Conference Centre.
This prominent modern building serves as the main visitor hub for cruise passengers.
Inside, the tourist information team speaks outstanding English and provides free town maps.
Outside the building, independent tour operators offer last-minute excursions.
These private guides accept multiple currencies, including British Pounds, US Dollars, Euros, and Icelandic Króna.
The Hof Centre also offers clean public restrooms, making it a handy pitstop before you begin your walk.

Exploring Akureyri Town on Foot: Church Steps, Hearts & Hidden Gems
Having visited Akureyri on multiple cruise visits, we have experienced this port in completely different weather conditions, ranging from chilly Arctic breezes to an astonishing 21°C heatwave!
Regardless of the weather, Akureyri town centre is wonderfully compact and full of character.
Our first destination is always Akureyrarkirkja, the grand Lutheran church perched on the hill above town.
During one of our previous visits, the famous stone steps leading up to the church were closed and undergoing major refurbishments, forcing us to take the long road around the hill.
However, the church steps have since been completely rebuilt, renovated, and officially reopened to the public, making the climb from the town centre smoother and more impressive than ever!
It is worth noting that because Akureyrarkirkja is an active place of worship, the interior can occasionally be closed for private services or funerals.
Even if you cannot step inside, climbing up the newly restored steps to the church terrace offers cracking panoramic views across the fjord and harbour.
At the bottom of the hill, you will find a heart-shaped photo frame, along with yellow picture frames and troll statues dotted around the main street.
While strolling along the High Street, keep an eye out for colourful pavement art, including Pokemon characters, as well as a striking pink ice cream parlour.
If you look closely at the pedestrian traffic lights around town, you will notice that the red lights are shaped like glowing hearts.
For a scenic walk, follow the waterfront into the Old Town to admire traditional timber houses before heading up towards the Akureyri Botanical Garden (Lystigarðurinn).
The gardens feature lovely walking paths, plant collections, and a modern cafe serving delicious lattes.

Local Eats: Bakeries, Hot Dogs & Cafe Delays
Exploring on foot certainly works up an appetite, and Akureyri offers some fantastic local stops.
Near the town square, you will find local food trucks and a famous hot dog stand.
This popular kiosk opens around lunchtime, serving traditional Icelandic hot dogs and adventurous reindeer hot dogs.
Right behind the hot dog kiosk sits a public hillside slide that is surprisingly popular with adults wanting a quick ride.
If you prefer baked goods, pop into the local bakery near the town centre for a traditional ham and cheese pastry or a sweet, sugar-glazed treat.
On sunnier days, street cafes near the town park offer outdoor bench seating.
Service can take a little time when sudden warm weather hits, but it provides a spot-on chance to sit back and people-watch.

After spending your morning exploring the town, Akureyri offers world-class afternoon excursions that leave directly from the port area.
Option 1: Eyjafjörður Whale Watching
Booking an independent whale watching tour through Viator is a brilliant alternative to cruise line excursions.
The tour meeting points are located right on the harbour pier, just a five-minute walk from the ship.
As the boat sails out into Eyjafjörður fjord, the coastal wind can feel freezing.
Fortunately, tour operators provide heavy thermal overalls that keep you warm enough to stay on the open top deck.
During our three-hour voyage, we followed two majestic humpback whales for over an hour as they spouted water and dived into the fjord.

The complex features two thermal pools overlooking the fjord, a cold plunge pool, a glass-fronted Finnish sauna, and swim-up bars.
Digital wristbands lock your locker and manage drinks purchases at the pool bar.
