Well, hello and welcome to Tom and Dom Travel! If you have ever dreamed of cruising to a place that feels completely out of this world, then Iceland has to be at the very top of your bucket list. Today, we are taking you to one of the most dramatic, jaw-dropping, and absolutely beautiful ports of call we have ever visited: Grundarfjörður.

Located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland (often referred to as "Iceland in Miniature" because of its diverse landscapes), Grundarfjörður is a tiny, traditional fishing village surrounded by epic volcanic mountains, black sand shores, and cascading waterfalls.

If your cruise itinerary features this port, prepare to have your breath taken away. We visited this incredible destination on a cruise, and we were absolutely blown away by its rugged beauty. Here is our ultimate, hands-on guide for cruise tourists looking to make the most of their day in Grundarfjörður—conquering the hills, dodging the sudden Icelandic downpours, and finding some of the most spectacular views on Earth!

The Tendering Adventure: Getting Ashore

First things first: Grundarfjörður is a tender port. Because the fjord is surrounded by shallow waters, large cruise ships cannot dock directly at a pier. Instead, your ship will anchor out in the deep, misty waters of the fjord, and you will take local tender boats to the shore.

If you have never experienced a tender port before, don't worry! It is a very straightforward process, but it does require a little bit of planning so you don't get stuck in a long queue.

Tom and Dom's Tendering Tips:

Grab Your Tickets Early: On our ship, we had to collect tender tickets in the main Piazza. We grabbed ours and sat down in the nearby cafe area to wait. It only took about ten minutes for our number to be called, so the system is usually highly efficient!
Head for the Top Deck: If the weather is clear and you are safely allowed to do so, try to sit on the top deck of the tender boat. The 10-minute ride across the fjord is absolutely spectacular. You will get incredible, unobstructed photos of your cruise ship framed by towering, mist-shrouded Icelandic mountains.
Keep an Eye Out for Wildlife: Keep your eyes peeled on the water! During our short ride to the pier, we spotted a cute little puffin bobbing on the surface. It gave everyone a quick wave before diving under, never to be seen again, but it officially started our "puffin watch" for the day!

First Impressions of Grundarfjörður

If you are expecting a bustling cruise terminal with duty-free shops, tour buses, and giant souvenir markets, you are in for a surprise. Grundarfjörður is incredibly small and delightfully untamed.

When you step off the tender, you are immediately in the heart of the village. There is no grand terminal building—just a local representative with a map, a few signs, and the fresh, crisp Arctic air. It is a wonderfully authentic experience that makes you feel like a true explorer.

Right at the pier exit, you will spot the local shuttle bus option. This is a shuttle that runs back and forth to the area's main attraction, the famous mountain of Kirkjufell. The shuttle charges a flat return fee. If you have mobility issues, this bus represents good value as it drops you just a five-minute walk from the main viewpoint. However, if you are able-bodied and up for an adventure, we highly recommend taking the scenic route and walking!

The Ultimate Hike: Journey to Kirkjufell

You cannot visit Grundarfjörður without visiting Kirkjufell (Church Mountain). Standing at 463 meters high, its unique, symmetrical, cone-like shape makes it the most photographed mountain in all of Iceland. If you are a fan of popular TV dramas, you might also recognize it as the "Arrowhead Mountain" from Game of Thrones.

While many passengers queued up for the shuttle bus, we decided to lace up our walking boots and do the hike on foot.

The Outward Walk: Majestic and Serene

From the tender pier, there is a clear footpath that runs out of town, alongside the main road, and all the way to the mountain. It is a lovely, scenic walk that takes about 45 minutes each way.

About midway through the walk, we encountered a stunning, smaller waterfall on the left-hand side of the path. The water was crystal clear, and there was a small trail allowing us to climb up closer to the flow. It was a fantastic place to stop, catch our breath, and take some beautiful photos before the main event.

Safety Note: While the footpath is easy to follow, we definitely do not recommend this walk for anyone with mobility issues or walking difficulties. The terrain can be steep, gravelly, and very slippy in places.

The Magic of Icelandic Weather

As we continued our hike toward the mountain, the weather was bright and pleasant. But if there is one thing you must respect in Iceland, it is that the weather changes instantly! Within a matter of minutes, a massive, dark cloud rolled over the peaks, and we were hit by a sudden, heavy downpour. We were absolutely soaked! Thankfully, we had our sturdy coats on, and the sheer beauty of the landscape kept our spirits high. If you are walking to Kirkjufell, always pack waterproof gear—no matter how sunny it looks when you leave the ship!

Arriving at Kirkjufellsfoss

At the foot of the mountain lies Kirkjufellsfoss, the iconic three-pronged waterfall that flows into the lake below. This is the exact spot where the legendary postcard photos of Iceland are taken, and seeing it in person is truly breathtaking.

However, because we arrived at "peak time" alongside several tour buses, it was incredibly busy. The pathways around the waterfall were wet, muddy, and quite slick. There are designated barriers set up to protect the delicate local flora and keep tourists safe. Sadly, we noticed quite a few fellow cruise passengers ignoring the safety signs and crossing the ropes just to get a selfie close to the water. Please don't be one of those tourists—the barriers are there for a reason, and slipping into those glacial waters is highly dangerous!

We contented ourselves with standing at the foot of the mountain, looking up at the majestic peak, and capturing some gorgeous memories before starting our 45-minute trek back to town.

Exploring the Village of Grundarfjörður

For our return journey to the port, we decided to walk along the coastal road route instead of the inland path. The road route is slightly shorter because it hugs the coastline, offering spectacular views of our cruise ship resting in the fjord. If you are traveling with children, however, we recommend sticking to the footpath, as the road has no barrier.

By the time we got back to the village, we were absolutely desperate for a restroom! In a tiny town like this, public facilities are limited. We discovered that the local town library doubles as the tourist information center and houses the only public toilet in the main square. Naturally, with a cruise ship in town, there was a massive queue! It is a lovely, cozy little building, but be prepared to wait if you need to use the facilities.

Once we sorted ourselves out, we spent some time exploring the charming town center. Here is what you can find around the main square:

The Viking Ship: A beautiful, full-sized wooden Viking ship monument that sits near the waterfront—perfect for a quick selfie!
Local Shops: A quaint garage, a small grocery shop, and a lovely boutique selling traditional, hand-knitted Icelandic woolen clothing (Lopapeysa).
The Church: A short walk up the hill leads to the local church. It is a very small, basic, and traditional Icelandic church that is incredibly peaceful and quaint.
The "Lion" Cat: On our way to the church, we encountered the absolute star of Grundarfjörður—a local cat that was so incredibly fluffy and massive, it looked just like a mini lion! It was very friendly and has practically become a tourist attraction in its own right for visiting cruisers.

Dining Ashore: A Word of Advice

After all that walking, we were feeling rather hungry and decided to try one of the local restaurants near the harbor. Unfortunately, because the town is so small and has only a couple of dining options, every single venue was completely fully booked with hungry cruise passengers.

If you want to enjoy a traditional Icelandic meal ashore, we highly recommend booking a table online well in advance of your cruise. Otherwise, you will find yourself doing what we did: heading straight back to the tender to eat on board!

Heading Back to the Ship

When we arrived back at the pier to board the tender, we were greeted by a massive queue stretching along the waterfront. We initially panicked, thinking we would be standing in the cold Icelandic breeze for hours.

However, the ship's crew handled the operation beautifully. As soon as one tender filled up and departed, another was waiting to take its place. Despite the daunting length of the queue, we were on board our tender in less than 15 minutes.

Because we were further back in the line, we sat inside the lower deck of the tender boat this time. It was a very different experience from our morning ride—it was quite cramped (we were squished in like sardines!) and the wind had picked up, making the ride back to the ship rather bumpy. It only lasted ten minutes, though, and it was a fun, authentic taste of North Atlantic seafaring!

The Magic of an Icelandic Sailaway

Once we were safely back on board and had warmed up our frozen fingers, we treated ourselves to a late lunch at the pool deck grill—nothing beats a hot burger, pulled pork bap, and a mountain of cheesy bacon fries after a long hike in the rain!

But the absolute highlight of our day in Grundarfjörður happened during sailaway.

If your cruise ship is departing this fjord, you must find a spot near a window or out on the open decks. We were incredibly lucky to have a window seat in the main dining room for dinner as the ship began to glide away. Watching the mighty mountain of Kirkjufell slowly fade into the distance, changing colors from deep green to mystical purple as the clouds drifted over its peak, was a moment we will never forget.

After dinner, we wrapped up warm and ran out onto the Promenade deck to soak in the last views of the fjord. It is an incredibly peaceful, mind-blowing landscape that makes you realize just how small we really are.

Tom and Dom’s Golden Rules for Grundarfjörður

To help you conquer this stunning port of call, here are our top tips for cruise passengers:

🧥 Dress for "Four Seasons in One Day": Icelandic weather is wild and unpredictable. Wear layers, bring a windproof and waterproof outer shell, and wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip.
🚌 Choose Your Transport Wisely: The 45-minute walk to Kirkjufell is gorgeous and represents excellent value (it's completely free!). However, if you have mobility issues or are traveling with young children, the shuttle bus from the pier is a much safer and more practical option.
🚽 Use the Restrooms on Board: Because public toilets are extremely limited in the village, make sure to use the facilities on your cruise ship right before boarding the tender boat to avoid the massive library queues!
🍽️ Book Your Lunch in Advance: If you want to try local Icelandic delicacies ashore, do not wait until you land. Book a table online weeks before your sail date, as the town's few cafes and restaurants fill up instantly.
📸 Stay on Deck for Sailaway: Don't miss the departure! The views of the fjord, the surrounding mountains, and the changing colors of Kirkjufell as the ship sails away are among the most beautiful sights in the entire cruise world.

Our Final Verdict on Grundarfjörður

Grundarfjörður is a port of call that captures the very essence of cruising in Iceland. It is quiet, majestic, completely unspoiled, and packed with natural wonders.
