Our Virgin Cruise Experience on Resilient Lady!

Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady Sailing into Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Virgin Voyages is a cruise line that has been turning heads ever since it launched. With its adults-only approach, bold design choices, unconventional entertainment, and restaurant-focused dining, it promises something completely different from traditional cruising.

As total cruise enthusiasts who have sailed on a wide variety of lines, we were incredibly intrigued. Would Virgin's approach live up to the massive amount of hype? Would we actually enjoy a cruise that throws out so many of the classic conventions we've all become accustomed to? And perhaps most importantly, is Virgin Voyages really worth that premium price tag?

We recently sailed aboard Resilient Lady for our very first Virgin Voyages experience. After several days fully immersed in Virgin's unique world, we are ready to share our honest thoughts.

Before You Board: The App Is Essential

One thing you will quickly discover about Virgin Voyages is that the app plays a massive role in your holiday. Before you even think about boarding, you will need to download the Virgin Voyages app to complete your check-in, upload travel documents, select an embarkation time, book shore excursions, and manage your daily schedule.

Unlike many other cruise lines where the app feels like an optional extra, on Virgin it is absolutely essential.

Our Top Booking Tips:

  • Don't Panic on Dining: Restaurant reservations open up before you sail, and popular spots fill up fast. However, Virgin only releases a portion of the tables in advance. Plenty more slots open up the moment you step onboard and connect to the ship's Wi-Fi.

  • Get It Early: Download the app a few weeks before departure to familiarise yourself with how it works, as it will be your primary planning tool.

First Impressions of Resilient Lady

From the moment we stepped onboard, it was crystal clear that this was not going to be a typical cruise. Resilient Lady immediately feels different. Gone are the grand crystal chandeliers, traditional formal atriums, and classic cruise décor. Instead, Virgin has created a modern, stylish environment that feels much more like a trendy boutique hotel than a standard cruise ship.

The heart of the ship is The Roundabout, a vibrant central hub featuring a striking spiral staircase and regular pop-up entertainment throughout the day and evening. The atmosphere is energetic without feeling overwhelming.

One thing we noticed straight away was how incredibly friendly and approachable everyone seemed. Virgin refers to guests as "Sailors" rather than passengers, and there is a genuine sense of community throughout the ship. Because it is strictly adults-only, the vibe naturally feels a lot more relaxed. There are no children's clubs, no family-focused announcements, and no crowded pool decks packed with inflatables. Instead, the entire ship focuses on delivering an amazing experience tailored just for adults.

A Ship Packed With Unique Spaces

One of the most impressive aspects of Resilient Lady is the sheer variety of venues. Rather than relying on standard cruise ship layouts, Virgin has created distinct spaces that each boast their own brilliant personality.

  • The Dock: Located at the aft of the ship on Deck 7, this quickly became one of our absolute favourite spots. It offers a relaxed, Mediterranean-inspired atmosphere with fantastic sea views.

  • The Dock House: The cozy indoor counterpart to The Dock, providing comfortable daybeds, live acoustic music, and a laid-back beach club vibe.

  • The Manor: Inspired by Richard Branson's early music career, this glamorous two-story nightclub features iconic mirrored, diamond-lit corridors that are easily the most photographed location onboard.

For evening drinks, you are spoiled for choice. Venues like The Loose Cannon (a nautical, Brighton-inspired social bar), On The Rocks (a massive mixology and martini bar below The Roundabout), and Draught Haus (a casual craft beer taproom) each provide their own distinct spin on nightlife. Every venue has its own distinct identity, meaning the ship never feels repetitive.

The Pool Deck Debate

If you have spent any time researching Virgin Voyages online, you have probably heard people debating the size of the pool. Many first-time cruisers worry that it looks a bit too small. Having experienced it ourselves, we don't entirely agree with the criticism.

Yes, it is smaller than the enormous resort-style pools found on some mainstream mega-ships, but that is missing the point. The Aquatic Club functions much more like an upscale social hub than a traditional swimming pool. During the day, it is an incredibly stylish place to relax, grab a cocktail, and soak up the sunshine. At night, especially during the legendary Scarlet Night, it transforms into the stunning centrepiece for the biggest party on the ship. For us, the pool layout worked perfectly within Virgin's overall concept.

Our Ocean View Cabin

We stayed in a Sea View cabin (Virgin's term for an Ocean View), and it proved to be an excellent choice for our sailing. Virgin has taken a very futuristic approach to cabin design where everything feels clean, functional, and cleverly thought out.

The Porthole View: The large, illuminated porthole window features a fantastic built-in nautical window seat, making it the perfect spot to sit with a morning coffee and watch the waves drift by.

Storage has been integrated seamlessly throughout the room to maximise space. Technology is a major highlight here, with an in-cabin tablet that controls the mood lighting, custom curtains, television entertainment, and room temperature. Some travellers describe the aesthetic as IKEA-inspired, and we can see where that comparison comes from, but for us, it worked beautifully. The cabin felt contemporary, highly practical, and surprisingly comfortable.

The Best Food We've Had at Sea?

If there is one area where Virgin Voyages genuinely blew us away, it was the food. In fact, it might just be some of the best dining we have ever experienced on a cruise ship.

Virgin has completely eliminated the traditional main dining room and standard buffets. Instead, you get to choose from multiple specialty restaurants, and every single one of them is included in your cruise fare. This means every evening feels like going out for a premium dinner in a major city.

Restaurant

Style & Vibe

Our Highlight

The Wake

Elegant steakhouse and seafood lounge

Beautifully cooked steaks with a glamorous view of the ship's wake.

Gunbae

Interactive Korean Barbecue

High-energy dining featuring drinking games and built-in table grills.

Extra Virgin

Elevated Italian

Incredible freshly made pasta and delicious charcuterie boards.

Razzle Dazzle

Creative, vegetarian-forward dining

Fun, bold dishes that even the biggest meat lovers will thoroughly enjoy.

The Galley Changes Everything

Instead of a traditional, self-serve buffet line, Virgin created The Galley. This is a brilliant food-hall concept featuring multiple made-to-order stations. Whether you are craving fresh sushi, burgers, tacos, breakfast paninis, or specialty salads, everything is prepared fresh for you. The quality is significantly better than a standard cruise buffet, giving it the vibe of a trendy city food market. Oh, and the late-night pizza place became a very regular stop for us, because who doesn't love a fresh slice after a few cocktails?

Drinks Without the Hidden Costs

Virgin also takes a completely different approach to beverages. There is no traditional all-inclusive drinks package to worry about. Instead, you purchase a Bar Tab, which works like a prepaid onboard credit for your drinks. It is incredibly simple to use, and Virgin often throws in free bonus credit if you top it up before you sail.

Best of all, essential drinks like sodas, filtered water, non-specialty coffees, and teas are completely free and included in your fare. This is something many traditional cruise lines still charge a hefty premium for. For cocktail lovers, every bar onboard features its own unique menu tailored specifically to that venue. Our top tip is to explore as many bars as possible, as some of the most interesting mixology creations are hidden away in unexpected corners.

The Athletic Club on Scarlet Night, Giant Octopus

Entertainment That Breaks the Rules

If you are expecting traditional Broadway-style production shows or classic cruise ship crooners, you will definitely need to reset your expectations. Virgin prefers immersive, interactive, and slightly edgy experiences.

One of the absolute highlights of our trip was The Miss Behave Show. It is a wonderfully chaotic, hilarious blend of comedy, audience participation, and unexpected surprises. It is tough to explain without giving away the secrets, but trust us when we say it is well worth booking.

Another fantastic option is the Grog Walk. Part pub crawl, part social mixer, and part ship tour, it introduced us to several fellow sailors, took us through the best bars on the ship, and included plenty of delicious drinks along the way. If you are travelling as a couple or solo, it is a brilliant way to make friends early in the cruise.

Scarlet Night Lives Up to the Hype

Before we boarded, everyone told us we had to experience Scarlet Night, and now we totally understand why. The entire ship transforms into a massive, red-themed celebration.

Performers pop up in the corridors, music fills every single venue, and passengers fully embrace the dress code.

There is even a Glam Station to help you add some sparkle before the evening kicks off. The night eventually culminates in a massive, high-energy deck party right around the pool. It is unlike anything we have ever experienced at sea. Even if you are normally a bit reluctant to join in on themed nights, Scarlet Night is the one occasion where we strongly recommend getting fully involved.

Exploring Amsterdam

Our specific itinerary included an overnight stay in Amsterdam, which turned out to be a massive highlight. Rather than rushing passengers through a short, hectic port call, Virgin allowed us to experience the city during both the day and late into the night.

This created a much more immersive destination experience. We loved being able to explore the historic canals, sample local street food, and enjoy Amsterdam's unique nightlife without watching the clock. It is a simple scheduling change compared to traditional lines, but it significantly enhanced our overall holiday.

Final Thoughts: Would We Sail Again?

So, the big question: would we sail with Virgin Voyages again? Absolutely!

Resilient Lady isn't trying to be a traditional cruise ship, and that is exactly why it works so brilliantly. The food is exceptional, the entertainment is refreshingly different, the adults-only atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed, and the ship itself feels genuinely unique.

It certainly won't suit everyone. If you love formal dress codes, traditional cruise routines, and classic main dining rooms, Virgin might feel a bit too unconventional. But if you are looking for something fresh, innovative, and just a little bit cheeky, Virgin Voyages delivers an experience unlike anything else at sea. Our first Virgin cruise completely exceeded expectations, and we are already looking at booking our next sailing!
