P&O Aurora Cabin D211 Review: Sea View Warning

Inside cabin D211 on P&O Aurora: a spacious layout, but the window directly faces outdoor terrace furniture

Most cruisers assume booking an outside cabin guarantees a peaceful glimpse of rolling waves and ocean horizons.

When we were allocated cabin D211 on P&O Cruises' mid-sized, adult-only favourite, Aurora, we were initially intrigued. Aurora originally entered service in 2000, but this particular room is one of several newer cabins built into space formerly occupied by the children's club facilities.

After dozens of cruises and hundreds of days at sea across various lines, we have learned that marketing labels do not always match reality. While the cabin looked smart and modern on paper, our five-night stay proved that a cabin designation can be utterly misleading.

P&O Aurora Cabin D211 is an outside Sea View cabin located aft on D Deck. While it offers modern decor, generous floor space, and close proximity to The Glass House, it lacks any real sea view. The window directly overlooks the busy Crystal Deck aft terrace pool and bar, creating severe privacy issues and persistent noise from the Carmen's show lounge directly beneath.

First Impressions: Boarding and Arrival

Arriving at your cabin on embarkation day is always exciting. On Aurora, your cruise information, Horizon daily programmes, and cruise cards are left waiting outside the door.

We noticed our cruise cards already had our Deluxe drinks package gold stickers affixed. In the past, you often had to queue at an onboard bar to get package stickers sorted. Having them pre-applied saves valuable holiday time, letting you head straight for an embarkation lunch or toast your departure without unnecessary faff.

Stepping inside, the cabin immediately feels wider and noticeably more open than traditional standard cabins on older vessels.

Safety information and muster station details are clearly marked on the back of the entrance door (our designated muster point was station E). The room temperature is easily adjusted via the wall-mounted climate control panel right beside the entrance.

P&O Aurora Sea View CABIN TOUR and REVIEW D211 in 4K! Possibly, the WORST cruise ship cabin!

This is our P&O Aurora Sea View Cabin cabin tour and review D211 which is located at the aft on Deck 8. Is this the worst cabin at sea? We have put together this tour in the hopes of it being useful and we hope it gives you a clear indication of what amenities P&O Cruises cabins have to offer.

Cabin D211 on P&O Aurora features a generous vanity desk with plenty of open shelving and tea-making facilities

Cabin Layout and Living Space

Because cabin D211 was repurposed from the old youth club area rather than being part of the original 2000 build, the interior footprint is generous.

Right inside the entrance, you will find a full-length mirror, a waste bin, and a pair of fixed coat hooks. We always recommend packing a few magnetic hooks for cruise cabins to hang lanyards and jackets, but these built-in hooks are very handy.

The large vanity unit offers generous shelving, a secondary chair, a waste bin, and a wall-mounted mirror with dedicated overhead lighting. You will also find:

  • A standard kettle, mugs, and glassware.

  • Tea and coffee supplies, which your cabin steward will happily replenish upon request.

  • A mini-fridge situated under the desk that comes completely empty, giving you space to chill your own bottled water or soft drinks.

  • Four storage drawers, with a standard hairdryer stored in the bottom drawer.

Power points are one area where the cabin's refit fell slightly short. There are two standard UK three-pin sockets located right behind the kettle on the vanity desk. However, there are no bedside power points and no integrated USB charging ports anywhere in the room. If you like to charge your phone or tablet on your bedside table overnight, you will need a long charging cable or an unpowered travel adapter.

Opposite the large double bed (which can easily be split into twin beds upon request) sits a remarkably large flat-screen television. Compared to the compact screens found on older sister ships like Oriana or standard cabins across older P&O tonnage, this display is modern and spot-on for catching up on ship announcements or films.

Beside the bed, you have bedside tables with two small drawers, reading lights, and lamp switches. A separate armchair and small occasional table sit adjacent to the wardrobe, giving you a comfortable place to sit without lounging across the duvet.

Wardrobe storage in cabin D211 on P&O Aurora is quite limited, split between hanging rail space and shelves

Storage Space and Wardrobes

Storage in cabin D211 is a mixed bag.

Rather than fitted, floor-to-ceiling wardrobes, the room features a freestanding wardrobe unit. Inside, you will find:

  • One hanging rail offering a modest amount of vertical hanging space.

  • Three built-in shelves on the adjoining side.

  • Adult life jackets stowed safely on the top shelf.

  • A digital safe, which easily accommodates small tablets or passports, though you will struggle to fit a full-sized 15-inch laptop.

  • Laundry bags and pricing slips if you prefer to use the ship's paid pressing and laundry service. (Self-service launderettes with irons and washers remain free to use on Aurora's passenger decks.)

Because the shelving and safe take up half the wardrobe and there are no large clothing drawers below, full hanging space is quite limited. If you are packing formal wear, dinner jackets, and multiple long dresses for a longer two-week cruise, hanging capacity will feel tight.

Modern and bright, though the clingy shower curtain in P&O Aurora cabin D211 is a known drawback

The Bathroom Facilities

Cruise bathrooms on older ships can feel dated, but because D211 is a newer installation, the styling is fresh and clean.

The finish avoids the pastel pink colour schemes seen in older, original Aurora cabins, replacing them with crisp, contemporary tiling and vast mirrored cabinets. The mirrored medicine cabinets conceal ample recessed shelving for toiletry bags and come fitted with an integrated dual-voltage shaver socket.

The washbasin is stocked with The White Company hand soaps, while the shower cubicle features wall-mounted White Company shampoo and shower gel. If you require hair conditioner, you will need to ask your cabin steward to deliver small bottles to your room.

There are, however, two notable drawbacks in this bathroom:

  1. The Shower Curtain: P&O opted for a fabric shower curtain rather than a glass screen, which inevitably clings when water is running.

  2. Shower Cubicle Size: The shower footprint is exceptionally narrow. Even for someone of average build, you only have about a hand's width of clearance on either side.

  3. Ventilation: On arrival, we noticed the ceiling ventilation extract was heavily caked with dust and needed flagging with housekeeping.

Sold as a Sea View: the window in cabin D211 on P&O Aurora looks directly onto the busy aft terrace deck

The Major Problem: Privacy and "Sea Views"

When booking an outside cabin on P&O Aurora, passengers expect a clear view out towards open water. Cabin D211 is sold directly under the Sea View cabin classification, but our experience was anything but scenic.

Instead of an ocean view, the window looks out across the open aft Crystal Deck terrace. Your view consists entirely of:

  • Patio tables and deck chairs.

  • The outdoor aft terrace bar.

  • Sun loungers and guests soaking in the aft hot tubs.

While the window features a daytime reflective tint, that privacy disappears completely the second your cabin lights are switched on. Crew members cleaning the deck, maintenance staff, and fellow guests strolling past in various states of swimwear have a completely unobstructed view straight into your bedroom.

To maintain any shred of personal privacy, we were forced to keep our heavy blackout curtains pulled shut 24 hours a day. For all practical purposes, we were paying for a Sea View cabin while living inside a windowless inside room. On warm-weather itineraries, when the aft pool deck is bustling all afternoon, having passers-by peering into your living quarters is a genuine nuisance.

Deck Location and Noise: Carmen's Show Lounge

If the lack of privacy was disappointing, the nighttime noise levels were intolerable.

On paper, D Deck aft boasts excellent convenience. You are only a few steps away from The Glass House (one of our favourite spots on Aurora for wine flights and small plates curated by Olly Smith).

The critical flaw lies directly underneath cabin D211: Carmen's Show Lounge.

Unlike Aurora's Curzon Theatre, which stages two evening production shows and then closes down, Carmen's is Aurora's secondary entertainment venue and late-night lounge. Its schedule runs almost continuously throughout the entire cruise:

  • Morning fitness and dance classes starting early in the day.

  • Afternoon rehearsals, choral sessions, and trivia.

  • Late-night live band sets, high-volume cabaret acts, and dance parties running well past midnight every single evening.

The soundproofing between D Deck and Carmen's is virtually non-existent. We could hear musical acts, bass beats, and spoken microphone commentary word-for-word while lying in bed.

Despite reporting the problem to guest services daily and requesting a cabin swap, we were informed the sailing was fully booked and no move was possible. Staff told us that noise issues along this specific corridor are well-known to the ship's team. For light sleepers or anyone who values a quiet evening, it is an exhausting room to stay in.

Was It Worth It?

Our verdict on P&O Aurora Cabin D211 is an absolute and unequivocal no.

It offered a modern TV, reliable air conditioning, and a fresh bathroom aesthetic, but these perks cannot compensate for the total lack of privacy and disruptive late-night noise.

  • Who it suits best: Heavy sleepers who plan to stay out in the bars until 1:00 AM every night and care more about quick access to the pool deck and The Glass House than having a peaceful bedroom.

  • Who should avoid it: Anyone who values a good night's rest, light sleepers, and cruisers booking a Sea View cabin specifically to enjoy watching the sea from their room.

If you are booking a Select Price fare where you choose your own cabin number, avoid D211 and neighbouring newly fitted cabins in this specific aft section of D Deck. If you are booking an Early Saver fare and find yourself allocated D211, we strongly suggest contacting your booking agent immediately to see if any alternative cabin allocations exist.

Personal Takeaway

We always look for the silver linings on every ship we board, and we still have a soft spot for P&O Aurora's traditional, elegant lines and adult-only ambiance. Having a relaxed pint or glass of wine in Andersons and dining in The Glass House remains a delight.

However, your cabin is your sanctuary at sea. Cabin D211 was genuinely the most frustrating cruise accommodation we have ever encountered, simply because it completely failed to deliver on its Sea View promise while keeping us awake night after night. When you book an ocean view, you deserve to see the sea, not someone sipping a cocktail outside your window while a cabaret singer's bassline vibrates your mattress.
