Sea days on a cruise are designed for taking things slow, but there is one daytime experience that takes onboard dining to another level.
We couldn’t have been more excited when we first heard about The Great Musical Afternoon Tea. It combines two things we love. So of course, we were eager to see how Marella Cruises blends traditional British afternoon tea with musical theatre. We experienced the event first-hand during our sea day aboard Marella Voyager, but the brilliant news for cruisers is that this experience is available across the entire Marella fleet.
Having spent plenty of time at sea, we know that a standout speciality dining event relies on great service, quality ingredients and an engaging atmosphere. So, what did we discover?
What is the Great Musical Afternoon Tea?
Officially titled The Great Musical Afternoon Tea, this hosted event is available fleet-wide, combining a multi-course afternoon tea with live West End-style performances. Guests enjoy signature welcome drinks, a choice of teas or freshly brewed coffees, savoury courses, warm scones with genuine clotted cream and creative pastries accompanied by live singing and piano music.
After being guided to our table and seeing the elegant setting of the Silver Fork dining room aboard Marella Voyager, we can honestly say it proved to be a genuine highlight of our cruise.
Marella Cruises already delivers generous all-inclusive dining options, from full cooked breakfasts in their Main Dining Rooms to quick lunchtime bites at places like The Snack Shack. However, for guests looking to elevate a sea day, this fleet-wide speciality event offers something memorable.
Hosted exclusively on sea days, this bookable afternoon experience transforms an iconic British tradition into an intimate, cabaret-style celebration. The venue itself is styled with musical theatre posters and memorabilia, transporting you straight into the West End before the music even begins.
While we enjoyed our sitting inside Silver Fork (the British speciality restaurant located off the Atrium on Deck 5 of Marella Voyager), you can book this exact event across the fleet:
Marella Voyager: Silver Fork (Deck 5)
Marella Explorer and Marella Explorer 2: The Dining Club
Marella Discovery and Marella Discovery 2: 47° (the main restaurant)
It runs once a week on a single sea day and capacity is strictly limited, so demand can be high. Book through Cruise Control before you sail, or via Navigate once onboard, subject to availability.

Our MUSICAL AFTERNOON TEA and FORMAL NIGHT on Marella Voyager
In the afternoon we went and had a musical afternoon tea and were impressed with the offerings and entertainment that was available. In the evening it was the Captain's welcome event and we dined in Latitude 53. We then went and explored The Exchange and sampled some of their unique cocktails.

Settling into our table inside Silver Fork aboard Marella Voyager, ready for The Great Musical Afternoon Tea to get underway.
First Impressions: The Silver Fork Setting
On our Marella Voyager sea day, we met just outside Silver Fork ahead of our afternoon sitting.
The arrival process was smooth and simple because every party has an allocated table reserved prior to the event. There is no need to queue early or scramble for the best vantage point, ensuring a very calm start to the afternoon.
The waiting staff, dressed in their smart uniforms, welcomed us warmly and escorted us directly to our table for two. From the moment we walked in, a live pianist was playing gentle, acoustic arrangements of familiar stage melodies on a piano. It set an immediate sense of occasion, giving everyone a chance to settle in and test their knowledge of popular musical show tunes.

Signature Cocktails and Welcome Appetisers
Shortly after we sat down, our waiter took our drinks orders. The experience includes a choice of speciality welcome drinks alongside a full selection of teas (including English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Jasmine Green Tea and fruit infusions) as well as freshly brewed coffee and speciality coffees like lattes and cappuccinos.
We tried both signature alcoholic options:
A Glass of Sparkling Kir: A crisp blend of sparkling wine and crème de cassis that felt suitably celebratory for a sea day afternoon.
G & Tea Time Cocktail: A clever, refreshing mix of gin, club soda, fruit tea, citrus, berry liqueur and spice that quickly became our favourite pour of the sitting.
For non-drinkers, there is also the Pineapple Sunshine Mocktail (pineapple juice, orange juice, citrus mix, grenadine and soda). If you are celebrating an anniversary or milestone, you can also opt for The Great Musical Champagne Afternoon Tea, which upgrades your welcome drink to a glass of Champagne (available at an additional cost).
We also ordered a fresh pot of English breakfast tea, which arrived in a proper traditional teapot. Our attentive waiter was prompt with refills, ensuring cups were never left empty.
Before the tiered stands made their entrance, the team served the "Food, Glorious Food" starter course, pairing a bowl of warm buttered popcorn with chilled strawberry and Cointreau soup. Please note that the soup recipe contains a touch of Cointreau liqueur, which is handy to know for non-drinkers and families, though non-alcoholic adjustments are readily accommodated. Infused with fresh garden mint, it had a smooth, creamy texture that made for a remarkably light and refreshing palate cleanser.

The grand parade arrival of our three-tiered afternoon tea stand, filled with themed savouries, warm scones, and pastries
The Grand Parade and Afternoon Tea Stand
Just as we cleared our starter bowls, the pianist announced that the main service was officially underway.
In a cracking bit of cruise flair, the waiting staff entered the dining room together in a grand parade, each proudly carrying a tiered afternoon tea stand. A lovely moment that got a round of applause from the entire room.
The 3-tiered stand was filled with items cleverly themed around famous stage musicals:
1. The Savoury Tier
The bottom tier delivered a fantastic spread of delicate sandwiches and warm savouries. Highlights included the mature cheddar and apricot chutney on pumpernickel bread (from the "School Lunch" sandwich trio), Coronation chicken on tiger bread ("By Royal Appointment") and tender, warm beef tenderloin yakitori strips glazed in homemade teriyaki sauce ("Vietnamese Melody"). Other creative bites included watermelon infused with feta mousse ("Thank You For The Music") and torched brie with raisin & caramelised onion compote on brioche toast ("Ooh La La... French Connection").
2. Warm Scones with Real Clotted Cream ("Naughty... But Nice")
Cruisers will know that afternoon tea at sea often falls short on one key element: clotted cream. Often it can be artificial squirty or whipped cream, which never hits the mark. Marella got this spot-on. Freshly baked, crumbly warm homemade scones arrived with proper thick clotted cream and strawberry preserves, exactly as afternoon tea should be enjoyed.
3. Patisserie Delights and Ice Cream Finale
The top tier carried a collection of themed pastries and desserts, including the chocolate almond sponge "Gateau Opera", mini Eton mess in a brandy snap basket ("A Spoonful of Sugar"), lemon cream choux buns inspired by Les Misérables ("On My Own"), and baked New York cheesecake bites ("I Like To Be In America"). To complete the feast, the crew circulated with individual dishes of ice cream, rounding off an abundant meal.

Broadway Show Lounge vocalists surprising diners with live musical theatre performances between the tables inside Silver Fork
Broadway Surprises: Live Entertainment at Your Table
The standout element of the afternoon is how the live entertainment unfolds.
Spoiler warning. Skip the next paragraph if you don’t want to spoil the surprise.
While guests were enjoying the savoury course, a sudden clatter echoed through the centre of the dining room as a tray of cutlery crashed to the floor. The room fell quiet, with guests assuming a server had experienced an unfortunate mishap.
Within seconds, the "waiting staff" broke out into rich vocal harmonies. They were two lead vocalists from the ship’s Broadway Show Lounge cast putting on a brilliant singing waiter routine.
Over the course of the 90-minute sitting, the singers returned for three dedicated musical sets, performing crowd favourites from Mamma Mia! and stage classics like Be Our Guest from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The vocal standard was first-rate, and having the performers sing right between the tables gave the venue an intimate, cabaret-lounge feel.
Was It Worth It?
Without question, we reckon the Marella musical afternoon tea offers outstanding value.
At £18.95 per person (or £25.95 for the Champagne upgrade), you receive welcome cocktails, warm appetisers, a generous three-tiered tea with real clotted cream, ice cream and West-End-calibre entertainment. Finding an equivalent cabaret afternoon tea package on the UK high street would easily cost double or triple that amount.

Practical Things to Keep in Mind
You will leave feeling very full. We recommend having a lighter breakfast and pushing your evening dinner sitting back past 8:00pm to give your appetite plenty of time to recover.
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dietary requirements are fully catered for (simply notify the team when booking).
Practical Tips for Your Sea Day
Pre-Book Early: Dining reservations typically open on Cruise Control around 6 months before departure (whereas shore excursions generally become available 2 to 4 months prior to sailing). Because it takes place just once during the cruise, the weekly sitting sells out quickly. Book through Cruise Control before you sail, or via Navigate once onboard, subject to availability.
Travelling in a Group: If you are travelling with a larger party of friends or family, make arrangements onboard as soon as possible to ensure your tables can be placed together.
Smart-Casual Dress: While not a formal evening, many guests choose to dress up a little for the occasion. Smart trousers, chinos, collared shirts and day dresses fit the dining room vibe nicely.
Arrive on Time: Your table is pre-allocated, meaning you do not need to queue early, but arriving promptly ensures you do not miss the opening piano arrangements or cocktail service.
Combining attentive service, genuine clotted cream scones and vibrant live performances, The Great Musical Afternoon Tea is easily one of the finest sea-day treats across the Marella fleet.
