Fred Olsen’s Gin and Jazz Show: Honest Review

Hosted by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. All opinions are 100% our own.

Most cruisers expect evening entertainment on a traditional British cruise line to stick firmly to the main theatre stage. Fred Olsen’s Gin and Jazz show flips that script entirely, ditching the tiered velvet seats of the auditorium for an intimate, 1920s speakeasy vibe at the very top of the ship.

After dozens of cruises and hundreds of days at sea across various lines, we have learned that a ship's marketing gloss does not always match the reality onboard. When we heard that Fred Olsen Cruise Lines had introduced a brand-new, immersive production to the Observatory Lounge aboard Balmoral, we knew we had to investigate.

The Fred Olsen Gin and Jazz show is a 1920s-themed immersive musical performance held in the Observatory Lounge on Balmoral. Featuring a live cast of four roaming singers, interactive flapper-era storytelling, and a bespoke gin cocktail menu, it offers an engaging, lively alternative to traditional main-theatre cruise entertainment.

Is it just an excuse to sell a few fancy gin and tonics, or is it a cracking night out? Here is our honest review of the performance, the drinks, and the practical tips you need before grabbing a seat.

The Setting: Inside the Observatory Lounge

The venue choice for this show is spot-on. Located high up on Deck 11 forward, the Observatory Lounge is traditionally where passengers head for panoramic sea views by day or quiet classical piano by night.

For the Gin and Jazz evening, the room takes on a completely different personality. The ship’s entertainment team transforms the central dance floor into a vintage cabaret space.

Even the bar staff and lounge crew look the part, fully decked out in 1920s attire. It is a lovely touch that instantly sets the mood before the first note is sung.

What surprised us most was just how popular the event was. We headed up before dinner expecting a quiet crowd, but the venue was buzzing and packed to the rafters.

Fortunately, our favourite little corner table that we had claimed throughout the cruise happened to be empty, giving us front-row seats right against the floor.

  • Deck location: Deck 11 Forward (Observatory Lounge)

  • Atmosphere: Lively, atmospheric, and nostalgic rather than rowdy

  • Seating tip: Arrive at least 20 to 30 minutes before showtime if you want a seat with an unobstructed view of the central floor

The Performance: Immersive 1920s Flapper Fun

The show features a talented four-piece cast who throw themselves into the roaring twenties flapper era with serious gusto.

Unlike a standard theatre show where performers remain separated from the audience behind the footlights, Gin and Jazz is fully interactive.

The singers wander through the tables, chatting with guests in character, cracking jokes, and singing directly to individual tables.

If you are someone who shrinks into your collar at the thought of audience participation, do not panic. It is charming, gentle, and fun rather than intrusive. They popped over to our table in full character for a quick natter, and we loved every second of it.

The musical repertoire combines full ensemble numbers on the dance floor with solo vocal showcases. The arrangements, vocals, and sound balance were top-notch.

It reminded us of popular immersive lounge concepts on newer luxury builds, such as The Exchange aboard Virgin Voyages or The Bright Lights Society on Cunard’s Queen Anne. Seeing Fred Olsen introduce this style of modern, multi-sensory entertainment to an intimate, classic ship like Balmoral was an impressive surprise.

The Bespoke Cocktail Menu & Value

What is a jazz lounge without a proper tipple?

Fred Olsen introduced a dedicated, themed gin cocktail menu specifically designed to complement the performance.

We felt duty-bound to sample a couple in the name of thorough research:

  • Strawberry Gimlet: A sweet, refreshing blend that balanced the botanical gin beautifully.

  • Gin Fizz: Served tall over plenty of crushed ice and fresh fruit garnish, crisp and incredibly easy to drink.

The individual cocktails were priced at around £7.25 each. In modern cruising terms, that is very reasonable on its own.

Even better, every single one of these speciality gin cocktails was included in the Fred Olsen All-Inclusive (Premium) Drinks Package. If you have the package booked, this whole show feels like unbelievable value for money. You get brilliant live vocals and bespoke mixed drinks without spending an extra penny.

Practical Tips for Cruisers Planning Their Evening

To make sure you get the most out of the experience, keep these practical points in mind:

1. Watch Your Dinner Timings

The Gin and Jazz performance runs for roughly an hour, usually timed just before the second dining sitting. We attended the show before our regular 8:00 pm dinner reservation downstairs in the Ballindalloch Restaurant. Because Fred Olsen generally operates traditional fixed-time dining, check the daily Daily Times programme carefully so your cocktails do not clash with your first course.

2. Dress to Blend In

While there is no mandatory flapper fancy dress, guests aboard Fred Olsen tend to smarten up in the evenings. On formal or smart casual nights, donning a jacket or a stylish dress fits right into the vintage speakeasy aesthetic of the Observatory Lounge.

3. Move Across the Ship Afterwards

Do not let your evening end when the jazz performers take their bows. We strolled down to the Morning Light Pub for an acoustic guitar set, caught part of the production show in the Neptune Lounge, and popped back up to the Observatory Lounge later in the night for classical piano from the wonderful Lynn Lawrence.

Was It Worth It?

Gin and Jazz is worth every penny, particularly because it costs nothing extra to watch.

Fred Olsen could easily have put on another generic cabaret singer, but creating a dedicated, themed show with custom drinks and costumed venue staff elevates the entire evening.

Who It Suits Best:

  • Fans of 1920s music, swing, and vintage vocal standards.

  • Guests who enjoy smaller, lively lounge venues over cavernous cruise theatres.

  • Anyone holding the Fred Olsen all-inclusive drinks package looking to sample speciality gin menus.

Who Might Want to Skip It:

  • Travellers who dislike any degree of performer interaction or wandering character acting.

  • Anyone who prefers absolute peace and quiet for their sunset drink in the Observatory Lounge.

The standout feature of our final night aboard Balmoral was the sheer atmosphere the cast brought into the room. It brought passengers together, got glasses clinking, and proved that traditional cruising can embrace fresh, modern entertainment concepts without losing its classic charm.

Our single top piece of advice: skip the pre-dinner rush at the main atrium bar, head straight up to Deck 11 early, grab a window-side sofa, and order a Gin Fizz before the first chord strikes.
